NRA Convention 2015 - Women - 1%, Minorities - 0%

  1. How, I wonder, does one convince oneself that this video can legitimately serve as the basis for a comprehensive demographic analysis of the attendees?

    1. It doesn't, actual counts are taken.

    2. You love to play dumb, Kurt, when it suits.

  2. At least they don't suggest exclusion in their name. It's not the Nation Rifle Association of Men.

And I count 0% minorities in protest of them as well, so what does that tell you?

    1. Is that all they had? No wonder I never could spot them!

    2. The protesters were only a handful. You're the one who's always going on about the too-small sample size, except when it helps your biased argument, of course.

    3. Mike,

It was a small sample size, just like the video above. I've subsequently seen pictures of the small Mom's Demand protest and there were some minorities in the group photo who weren't in this small sample--same as the way this video didn't catch all the minorities attending the NRA convention. Either this photo and the video are both demonstrative or they're neither demonstrative of who was there.

As for my comment about this being all they had, I was talking about the number of attendees of the Mom's Demand rally. Turns out they had a couple more busses--some NRA attendees went to their rally and took pictures--looked like they had 100-200 people. A far cry from the 400 they expected.

    4. MikeB: “The protesters were only a handful.”

Yeah, I guess we always have the problem of small sample sizes when looking at a gun control rally…

But here, take a look at this shot of everyone who attended and play your silly little “count the minorities” game:

Did you need two hands, Mike?

  3. As Kurt said, the tiny glimpse this video offers can't begin to tell the true story of the demographics of the convention--especially since you didn't even see a 10th of the exhibits in this video. Moreover, at the Magpul booth I know that there was a beautiful young lady of indeterminate race who showed me some of the new products and yet she never appears in this video, in spite of that being the booth he spent the most time at. Oh yeah, real representative of the demographics of the show.

Even I as an individual couldn't see the entire crowd that was there, but I did stand in some of the open spaces and look around to see what I could of the crowd so that I could give a report here. From most locations the crowd appeared to vary from 25-45% female. Some were with significant others who may have been the NRA members. Others were on their own or were with female friends.

The majority of attendees were white, which you would expect in a majority white country, but there were many people from other backgrounds. There were East Asians, blacks, hispanics, middle easterners (Nashville has Kurdish, Persian, and Arab communities), and Eastern Europeans. While the percentage of minorities wasn't at parity with demographics in the rest of society, from what I saw, they were well represented.

Oh, and I did see quite a few mixed race couples, and nobody was wearing sheets and chasing them down. Such a racist place. I saw no confederate flags, no racist bumper stickers, etc. I did hear one reference to the Klan--by an old guy talking about how a great or great-great uncle of his had been a part of it up in Indiana and about how this uncle and 7 of his buddies got shot in the legs by a Jewish jeweler with a Browning Automatic Rifle--seems the jeweler took exception to them burning a cross in his family's yard. The teller was commenting on how he'd looked the story up in the local papers and been disappointed at how the paper tried to slant the story to make the jeweler look like the bad guy.

TL;DR version: The line about the NRA being a bunch of White racists is total bull.

    1. Every time Nugent opens his mouth, he proves you wrong. You NRA supporters never chastise him, so you must agree with/accept that garbage.

    2. But... you said if we criticize what someone says, it is a violation of their right to free speech. At least if that person is Obama (I'm sensing there will be a double standard in effect).

    3. "As Kurt said, the tiny glimpse this video offers can't begin to tell the true story of the demographics of the convention"

What Kurt said was pure bullshit, but of course you endorsed it. I just rewatched the video to see if I remembered it correctly. There were two still shots with people in the background and 6 or 7 videos of 10 to 20 seconds each with people in the background, including one that was specifically aimed at showing the crowd. But that's a "tiny glimpse," huh?

"the crowd appeared to vary from 25-45% female" blatant lie.

"I did see quite a few mixed race couples" blantant lie.
