A 3-year-old LeBleu Settlement child died at a local hospital Monday night following an accidental shooting at her home on Arsene Road, authorities said.

Family members have identified the child as 3-year-old Alexis Mercer.

"This is a moment as a Sheriff that I have to tell people, you have got to protect our children," said Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Tony Mancuso in an interview with KPLC.

Mancuso said the father had been cleaning his guns in the living room that day, while his wife and children were gone, and he did not put them up before leaving for work. When the mother returned home with the three children, ages 1-3, the 3-year-old girl was able to get one of the loaded guns, accidentally causing the gun to fire.

  1. Complain to the prosecutor's office.

"If you can't afford a gun safe, every single gun that's sold in America comes with a gun lock. Lock your guns and keep them out of reach of children."
Myers said when the investigation is complete, the case will be turned over to the District Attorney's Office to determine if any charges will be filed."

    1. How about we complain and blame the idiot father. Maybe we should blame the gun loons who not only refuse to back gun safe laws, but give the impression that those laws are unconstitutional. Amazing how gun loons refuse to take responsibility for their actions and children end up dead. Then complain about authorities action, or inaction.

That is likely exactly what the prosecutors are doing right now. We have seen other examples of adults prosecuted for this kind of thing much more severely than any safe storage violation around. The prosecutor just needs to do his job. I personally believe he should be charged, and Mike is well aware of my personal standards of safe storage.

You really are an egotist. As I have said before, if this gun problem America has was just about YOU, we would have no gun problem.

    4. Yes, ss, the fact that you do it right is small consolation to the families who lose loved ones every day because your fellow gun owners don't do it like you do. We need mandatory safe storage.
