Negligent Ohio Gun Owner Shoots Himself in the Foot - No Charges

 Local news reports

A man is recovering after accidentally shooting himself in the foot.

According to deputies, Dan Gray was preparing to target shoot with several friends when the .357 revolver went off while he was pointing it at his right foot.

No charges will be filed at this time since it's believed to be a self-inflicted, unintentional discharge. Alcohol was not involved.

Violating two or three of the 4 Rules of Gun Safety should always result in charges and the loss of gun rights. With the same incredible irresponsibility, he could have killed someone.

  1. Sounds like he was the recipient of a self inflicted lesson on muzzle awareness. My guess is he'll be unlikely to reoffend. He has thousands of dollars in fines/medical bills. And that is all before the police even arrived.
Would you want that standard with all people to include law enforcement? I fairly regularly see news accounts of police officers shooting themselves at a range, or an innocent person when they kick in a door at the wrong address.

  2. Dear sir, would you like to press charges against yourself?
Why, no, I think I'll forgive myself.

Or perhaps you think the cops should charge this fellow with negligently causing his friends to die laughing? Mikeb, what specifically should the charge be in a case like this?

    1. Negligence with a gun should not be taked lightly, and that's regardless of whether it results in a kid dying, a self-inflicted and humorous wound, or a round into the wall. Negligence with a firearm should be treated with the utmost seriousness.

    2. In your world, but in mine, I'm happy with our current laws regarding accidents and negligence.

  3. Yes, because we often jail people who do something with a car that COULD HAVE killed someone but didn't, and we take away all of their rights to vote and drive.

Maybe it's different in Italy, and maybe you've been there too long to remember how the American justice system is supposed to work, so let me explain. For charges to be filed, there kinda needs to be some indication of a broken law. It's sorta important.

    Don't thank me--glad I could help!
