Chicago Murders at Historic Low

 Huffington Post

Chicago is well on its way to reaching historic lows in the area of homicide reductions for the first three months of 2013.  For example, February and March of 2013 experienced a significant decrease in homicides compared to the same time period in 2012.   Mayor Rahm Emanuel is very serious about protecting young people in the City of Chicago by organizing on a higher level with the corporate community, President Obama, and the community at large. Since the shooting death of Hadiya Pendleton and all of the national and international attention homicides have steadily declined.  This is good news for all of the residents in Chicago, considering Chicago's history of being a very violent city.  Recently, First Lady Michelle Obama visited Chicago to help motivate the Chicago corporate community along with Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

It is strange how the media covers all of the shootings and homicide stories but fail to provide the same coverage when homicides are down. If Chicago stays on the current pace there is a chance that Chicago will experience less than three hundred homicides this year.

If this keeps up the gun-rights fanatics will be deprived of one of their favorite false arguments.

What do you think?  That's a good point about the media, isn't it? I guess that already removes one of the pro-gun false arguments right there, that the media is so biased against them.

  1. I doubt that you'd find anyone that posts here would disagree that any downturn in violent crime is a good thing. Pro-gun advocates have long used Chicago as an example of strict gun control not being effective in combating violent crime because there were likely other causes of the violent crime than the guns.
So then the question is, what caused the drop in homicides? Could it be the result of a change in policing of the city? Or maybe its because of the new $25 per gun tax levied on gun purchases in the city?
Are you going to claim that suddenly Chicago's gun laws are finally spontaneously starting to work now?

  2. A less violent year won't change the couple of record years they just had. As for the media--this is a two month trend--the media can't tell if it's the actual trend or two outliers at the moment. Hopefully it's a trend, but time will tell.

    1. The primal violence which has become endemic in our society is the direct result of the scourge of onanism (caused by a diet rich in the consumption of meat and the lack of enema which is entirely manifest to physical and mental hygiene), a plague cast upon us by the liberal elite in an attempt to trust our society into the abyss of the resulting violence, and therefore provide justification to their depraved goals of enslavement to the primeval desires.

We shall not be fooled. We know who you are and the depraved goals you plan to achieve with such a diet of perversion, the infliction of the solitary self-abuse opiate of onanism, the nefarious and intentional infliction of perverted sexual desires (fetishes, rampant homosexuality, psychosexual objectification, unapproved affairs, and the lewd excesses all too common in marriage). All the result of poor diet, lack of exercise, and the retention of fecal matter caused by the utter lack of enema necessary for the preservation of physical health and sanity.

It is a Fact, supported by proven Science, medical research, and intensive statistical analysis that the decline of Western Civilization is directly correlated with the average number of sexual partners that homosexuals have over a lifetime.

I therefore pose a question: What do you believe to be the average number of sexual partners that homosexuals have over a lifetime?

    2. The Decline of Western Civilization is due to how many sexual partners some five to ten percent of the population might have? Even if there were any validity to your thesis, Doc/E.N./Jade, you would be showing the inherent weakness of the society in question if a minority of that number would be able to pull it down.

  3. Note the care with which this article avoids giving any actual figures. Historic lows in Chicago are a crime wave in most of the rest of the country.

But no, this doesn't remove our point. Chicago has a violence problem, and gun control isn't helping. It also doesn't change the fact that the media is biased against gun owners. Here's an uncritical piece about how wonderful things are in Chicago now. You don't notice me trying to move there, do you?

  4. "homicide reductions" is the measure one uses when they are tying to put a positive spin on how awful 2012 was

  5. "In the first quarter of the year, murders dropped 42 percent over the same period last year and shootings were down 27 percent -- reductions that authorities say were fueled by anti-gang initiatives."

When you backtrack from your original source to the next source down the line you get this. Which is something that pro-gun advocates have been suggesting for a long time. That the majority of the problems with Chicago's gun violence problem isnt the presence of guns, but gang activity.
Someone in the Chicago PD has possibly managed to figure out how to have an effect on gang activity. Very good news for the residents of the city. I wonder is it stuck in the chief's craw that he couldnt claim that somehow the city's gun laws that he has pushed to strengthen had an effect on the crime rates.

Does that make sense to you? Wouldn't it be the presence of guns in the gangs, the easy availability? And where do those guns start out? They start out the lawful property of lawful gun owners. That's where the problem lies, at the exact point where guns slip into the criminal world. That's why gun control laws are aimed at the lawful gun owners - because you're doing such a piss-poor job of holding onto your property.

    2. Mikeb, I'm not going to take your word on that. Mostly, what you do is speculate. Now and then, you show some study that gives a small figure of guns stolen--even though the owners did take efforts to prevent that. If you're going to be insulting, at least you could back it up with evidence.

    3. Evidence about what, Greg? You deny that almost all guns start out legally owned? I thought you accepted that and countered with your bizarro retort that in the future guns COULD be imported with the cocaine if necessary.

    4. Ah, yes. It's so bizzare to suggest that guns could be smuggled!

    5. I accept logic and evidence. Show me evidence about how criminals get guns. Not speculation. Not guesses.

  6. If Chicago's murder rate is falling, and perhaps on a pace to plummet within the next fifty years, to levels somewhat equivalent to the decent, enlightened parts of the state (nearly everywhere but Chicago, in other words), this is indeed an important development.

With the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals having ruled that Illinois' outright ban of defensive firearm carry violates the Second and Fourteenth Amendments, and is therefore illegitimate, Illinois has until June 9th to come up with some kind of carry law--or the ban simply disappears, with no other regulatory framework to replace it. Constitutional Carry, in other words.

The legislature has been tying itself in knots trying to beat that deadline, and are getting nowhere, because the Chicago-area Democrats insist on the most draconian carry law they can think of. Their "reasoning" (I'm in a generous mood) is that although maybe decent Illinoisans can be trusted with guns, the rampant, blood bank-depleting violence in Chicago proves that those savages must be kept disarmed.

But now with Chicago possibly on the verge of becoming as safe as Afghanistan, that objection can be dismissed, and all of Illinois can be liberated from the scourge of "gun control."
