What is a Liberal?

  1. Ann Coulter:
    "Civil rights are for blacks."

You can't compromise with that thinking, you can only out vote it.

  2. LOL. That's the same John F. Kennedy that escalated the Vietnam War, doubled down on the Soviet Union in the Cuban Missle Crisis, sent hundreds to slaughter by witholding US support (which he had promised to provide) at the Bay of Pigs, and supported across the board top to bottom tax cuts (a la George W. Bush).

A liberal today is NOT the same as a liberal was 50 years ago.

  3. Other than my rigid insistence on protecting individual liberty, that sounds like my positions. I would give a clearer definition of liberal: someone who believes in the greatest liberty for every citizen.

Your side believes in the greatest control and safety for everyone. You're leftists, not liberals.

  4. Insert "pretends to" before each clause in the JFK quote and it gets close to the truth.

  5. Today a "liberal" is someone who wants to steal from the rich and give to it to those that did nothing to deserve it while taking a good chunk of it for themselves.

  6. Greggy fails to understand that liberties come with responsibilities.

But, hey, gunloons always seem to forget half the equation. As George Bernard Shaw once wrote: "Liberty means responsibility. That is why most men dread it."

And if we truly think about it, gunloonery isn't about liberty. It's about a small fringe of fat white males who believe respect is earned by carring a firearm.

    1. Where did I deny or forget that liberty comes with responsibility? Of course, Jadebaby, you have the liberty of free expression, and we see how responsible you are with that. No wonder you doubt the ability of others to take care of their own liberties.

    2. You're correct Greg. JadeyBoy's post absolutely reeks of projection. Why don't you just come clean and tell us your own personal problem with guns is Jade? Is it like Laci where you've had multiple discharges in the past? I wouldn't trust myself with a gun if I were him either. Or maybe you are like Mike and dealt in the illegal gun trade. It'd be hard not to be suspicious of everyone else if that was the case.

    3. Greggy, it is in your comment. Have you repudiated your own comment? If not, why?

    4. First of all Kennedy was one of the worst modern presidents (and an NRA member) He failed at absolutely everything, and what progressive ideas he did propose where poached from his opponent- Nixon. Also, it is a rather morbid logical fallacy that political socio-economic philosophy of modern liberalism is in any major way forward-thinking. It requires a rather dangerous ignorance of human nature to accept as a serious political theory.

    5. Also the ideological "clergy" this political belief-system (I refuse to acknowledge it as a truly rigorous philosophy) is frequently found to support the fetish-object of the madman-the backwards and rather incoherent belief in individual liberty and true freedom of choice.

    6. E.N., your statements are consistently bizarre. Kennedy was a moderate. In many ways, his policies were better than Johnson's, and if he had lived, his eight years in office would likely have been among the best. But we'll never know.

Regarding your statement on liberalism, though, why don't you tell us what view of human nature you have. My view is that human beings have vast potential--for good or for evil--and are born with rights. In that view, we get the world that we deserve. How do you see things?

    7. That E.N.(guy? - I think) especially considering his previous posts, is probably the single biggest moonbat on this lunatic-bug-lamp of a blog. How does Mikeb seem to attract such profound derangement?

    8. I-A-N, thank goodness you've arrived to critique the other commenters and add so much to the discussion.

    9. I-A-N, it's not that he's attracting more lunatics. It's actually the same ones recycled. E.N. is just the sock puppet of another commenter here who is too embarrassed to show his face any longer. Check the IP's.

    10. I am not "another commentator who is too embarrassed to show his face any longer" I have read from this cite for a long time, and recently when other sensible people where hounded off, I decided I would give it a go....

  7. H L Mencken : Liberals have many tails and chase them all.

H L Mencken: " The urge to save humanity is almost always only a false face for the urge to rule it."

And there you have everything you need to know about liberals.

    1. H L Mencken :"What, ladies and gentlemen, in hell or out of it, are we to do with the Ethiop? Who shall answer the thunderous demands of the emerging coon? For emerging he is, both quantitatively and qualitatively, and there will come a morn, believe me or not, when those with ears to hear and hides to feel will discover that he is to be boohed and put off no longer - that he has at last got the power to exact a square answer, and that the days of his docile service as minstrel, torch and goat are done. When that morn dawns, I pray upon both knees, I shall be safe in the Alps, and not below the Potomac River, hurriedly disguised with burnt cork and trying to get out on the high gear"

And, there, you have everything you need to know about HL.

    2. Mencken had harsh words for every group. He regarded most people as poltroons, to use one of his favorite terms. If you read that quotation carefully, though, something that I doubt you're capable of doing, you'll see that he makes a valid point, namely that racial equality won't come instantaneously and won't come easily.

      Delete
    3. Greggy: Of course--especially when you call people "coons."

There's little wonder a white supremacist group regard HL Mencken as its muse.

    4. Government, like any other organization, refuses to acquiesce in its own extinction. This refusal, of course, involves the resistance to any effort to diminish its powers and prerogatives. There has been no organized effort to keep government down since Jefferson's day. Ever since then the American people have been bolstering up its powers and giving more and more jurisdiction over their affairs. They pay for that folly in increased taxes and diminished liberties. No government as such is ever in favor of the freedom of the individual. It invariably seeks to limit that freedom, if not by overt denial, then by seeking constantly to widen its own functions. H.L Mencken

Mencken's sagacity and prescience in any number of important matters is unarguable. The same cannot be said for any liberal.

Oh, really? Let's go to the videotape.

``... it is impossible to talk anything resembling discretion or judgment to a colored woman. They are all essentially child-like, and even hard experience does not teach them anything. ...``

      Or this, written in 1945:
``... The course of the United States in World War II ... was dishonest, dishonorable and ignominious, and the Sun papers, in supporting Roosevelt`s foreign policy, shared in this disgrace. ...``

On poor white southerners (he called them "lintheads"):

". . . Only a rare linthead girl remains a virgin after the age of 12. Her deflowering, in fact, is usually performed by her brothers, and if not by her brothers, then by her father. Incest is almost as common as fornication among these vermin, and no doubt it is largely responsible for their physical and mental deterioration."

    6. It's well established that Mencken hated everyone equally. But if you're going to disparage him for his comments about Southerners, you should look at the things that Mikeb and Dog Gone have said first.

    7. Jadegold said: "`... it is impossible to talk anything resembling discretion or judgment to a colored woman. They are all essentially child-like, and even hard experience does not teach them anything. ...``

Mencken was absolutely correct. Examples: Michelle Obama, or Jocelyn Elders or let's go to the videotape

      That was fun.
Regarding WWII, read a fucking history book not written by American exceptionalism apologists. Obviously you think the policy of dropping atomic bombs on civilian population centers is fine and dandy. Howsabout Dresden?

I notice that there is no Dr. in front of your name yet, you say incest does not cause certain problems.
And if you have information that incest did not occur with frequency in Mencken's day please provide it.

    8. Greg, I think the well forgotten fact is not that Mencken hated, but simply didn't suffer fools, demagogues, ignoramuses, pedants, sciolists, political mountebanks, or slaves to superstitious nonsense. I can find no hate in any of his writings.

    9. Hate is perhaps the wrong word. Let's say that Mencken was a cynic--otherwise known as a tired idealist. He used his rhetorical powers to expose folly and hypocracy wherever he found it, and those, alas, are all too common human conditions.

      Delete
    10. Orlin Sellers: You're a prime example that incest is detrimental.

Regarding Mencken's WWII comment, this wasn't about the bombing or use of atomic weapons--Mencken's postion was that the US was wrong to be in WWII..quotes of his from 1942 and later indicate that he believed US entry into the war was wrong and unjustified.

    11. Jadegold, the next thing you'll be telling us that if we hadn't gone to war we'd be speaking German. The fact is, we goaded Japan into attacking and were committing acts of war against them and Germany long before Pearl Harbor. But, thank you for unveiling yourself as the warmonger you clearly are.
